Do We Need an Excellence Framework?
“Excellence” is often a word misused by most organisations. Let me share my personal story. I worked for a British company where Excellence was part of the strap line, where we claimed to be so. But the question I had to myself, are we excellent? And if so, is there an outside view? That got me to challenge the EFQM Excellence Framework, and I submitted my Indian business to an independent assessment. Of course, the assessment and evaluation, reassuringly reiterated what I believed we were doing.
So, I urge you to ask yourself the same question each time you claim Excellence. Ask yourself, "Is your business just reacting to the market, or are you truly in control of your destiny?” In today's fast-changing world, just being good isn't enough. You need to be Excellent.
Indian companies have come a long way in this journey towards excellence, but sadly, these are a small number. These companies have used frameworks such as EFQM, TPM or the Baldrige Excellence framework. The use of frameworks provides a valuable guide for organisations to incorporate the current best practices that lead to success. As India grows rapidly and has its goal to be a developed nation by 2047, Indian businesses have to be truly excellent, and we have miles to go before we can say that.
I was part of the initial wave of the quality movement in India starting in 1990, and Indian companies began adopting the management systems approach to deliver quality, and that was by embracing the ISO 9000 standards. It is amazing what we achieved, as a country, especially in the automotive sector, in a rather short span of time, going from producing pretty shoddy automobiles to now producing some of the finest of the world. If companies could drastically improve using the basic framework standard, imagine the transformation using more holistic and challenging framework that leads to Excellence.
Many organizations rely on fragmented plans, leading to inconsistent results, stakeholder dissatisfaction, and an inability to adapt to new trends (like digital transformation or sustainability). Many also do not realise the ultimate benefits of following the best practices, defined in the management system standards and have relegated these to mere compliance driven by customers. Therefore, it is the Right Time for us to find our next approach to Excellence.
I would like to introduce you to the most Holistic, complete and probably the best framework in the world. This is the EFQM Model 2025.
EFQM Model 2025: As Simple As the 3 Questions it answers (The Core Framework)
Why do we exist, and where are we going?: Clarity on your Purpose, Vision, and Strategy—the foundation for everything you do.
How will we get there?: This is the action plan and Execution: how you engage people, create value, and drive necessary transformation and innovation.
What results have we achieved, and what do our stakeholders perceive? And what is the proof! Measuring performance is not just financial, but also the perception of the stakeholders (customers, employees, suppliers, community, and regulators).
